Fraternity for the Advancement of Missions XIII Assembly.
Every two years, the Fraternity for the Advancement of Missions (FAM) International celebrates a general assembly in one of the countries where it is represented. What is FAM International, you may ask? It is an umbrella organization for individual Latin American missions in all the countries of Central America, as well as Mexico, the U.S., and Spain.
Fernando Amezcua, associate missionary with Liebenzell USA, serves as president of FAM International and leads the Mexican chapter FAMEX. Rod Fry has been a part of FAMEX for the last twenty years and now also serves on the executive committee of FAM International. Gaspar Chable also serves with both Liebenzell and FAMEX. Liebenzell USA has signed an official partnership agreement with FAMEX and is excited to see how God will work in the future through this strategic alliance.
During our week in Sumpango, Guatemala, at Steve and Pam English ministry center called La Senda, or The Way, members were challenged as to the continued need to send and support missionaries to the less-reached parts of the world. We were also reminded of unfinished business in Mexico and Central America, where there are still unreached ethnic and linguistic groups.
Fernando challenged the assembly as to the ethnically diverse regions in Mexico, especially in the southern part of the country. Mexico has 11 linguistic families, 68 distinct languages, and 364 different variants and dialects of these languages. There are still around 27 unreached people groups in Mexico, as well as 170 groups that have no portion of the Bible translated in their language or dialect.
As missionary activity is trending downward in the U.S., it is encouraging to see our Latin American brothers and sisters taking the Great Commission seriously!
